Red Hook Studios also commented on how they aren't afraid to embrace the occult with their character designs for Darkest Dungeon, as demonstrated with the Flagellant: The character's design is based off Rorschach from Watchmen and pro wrestlers like 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and The Ultimate Warrior. Reaching Death's Door gives him huge buffs, and even if he ends up dying, the Flagellant leaves behind a final act of retribution that heals allies and damages enemies. This new class is also odd because the lower a Flagellant's HP sinks, the more its abilities are powered up. The game's developers also told PC Gamer that the Flagellant is about "on par with the Abomination" concerning his mechanical complexities, making him "a rather tough hero to play well". This new class pushes the envelope of the game's Affliction system because the Flagellant can't develop a virtue like other classes, and his only Affliction, called Rapturous, deals damage to both enemies and party members. The Flagellant is part of the extremist branch of the Church, is a high-DPS fighter and healer who is best at the front of one's party, and draws fearsome power through personal martyrdom while wielding a flail that is soaked with his own blood. Red Hook Studios finally released more information about the Flagellant, the new class coming in the Darkest Dungeon - The Crimson Court expansion today, and released a class-centric trailer for the new character.
